Ian comes to TRE with outstanding athletic credentials. A 2008 Olympian, a NCAA National Champion and 10-time All-American while at Stanford, Ian still holds the Stanford school records in the 5000m (13:15.33) and Steeplechase (8:32.09).
Throughout his career Ian was fortunate to work with exceptional coaches. His high school coach, Marnie Binney (nee Mason), later went on to coach at the University of Oregon. At Stanford, Ian was first coached by Vin Lananna, one of the premier leaders of Track and Field in the United states, and later by Andy Gerard, who led the 2003 team to a record-low 24 points at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. Post-collegiately he moved to Mammoth Lakes, CA, to become one of seven Olympians coached by Terrence Mahon. He spent the final three years of his career with the OTC Elite under Mark Rowland, Olympic Bronze medalist and coach of numerous Olympians. These five coaches make up the foundation of Ian’s coaching philosophy.
Ian brings experience not only in athletics but in leadership development and community organization as well. He has worked at the University of Oregon’s LeaderShape Institute and in the University’s Competition not Conflict program. In addition, he organizes and coaches a weekly community running group in Eugene.
Ian graduated from Stanford University in 2005 with a BA in Political Science. He ran professionally for Adidas from 2005-2009, and for Nike and the OTC Elite from 2010-2012.
